NIALL AT BIRTH ON ST. PATRICKS DAY!!
WHY THE NAME??
Niall - (NEE-al) An old Irish boy name, derived
from nél, meaning 'cloud'. Niall Noígiallach
(Niall of the Nine Hostages) was one of the
most legendary kings of Tara during the 4th
century. But before he could become king,
he had to pass a test. He and his brothers
had to go into the forest and fend for themselves,
finding their own food and and shelter. After
a while, they grew dangerously thirsty. They
found a well but it was guarded by an horribly
ugly hag. She offered them water, but only
in exchange for a kiss. Niall was the only
one who was willing to kiss her, and once
he did she transformed into the most beautiful
goddess and granted him kingship of "Erin"
(Ireland). He was the founder of the powerful
Uí Neill dynasty and the ancestor of the
Scottish MacNeil and Irish O'Neill families.
He was a great and powerful king and "carried
the name and the fame, and the power and
the fear, of Ireland into all neighbouring
nations". Not only is Neill a very popular
Irish boy name today, it is a traditional
Irish boy name given to many lads born into
the O'Boyle, O'Doherty, O'Donnell, O'Higgins,
O'Kelly, O'Neill, and O'Quinn families. A
nickname for Niall is Niallán, pronounced
"NEE-a-lahn". Niall has ranked
in the CSO's top 100 most popular Irish boy
names every year since they began publishing
the report in 1998.
CLIONA BEING BORN ON ST PATRICKS DAY
Cliona - (KLEE-a-na) From the Old Irish girl
name Clídna. According to Old Irish legends,
Clídna was the name of one of the three beautiful
daughters of the poet Manannán mac Lir. A
fairy named Clídna was the guardian spirit
of the MacCarthy's. Clídna had three magical
birds that could sing the sick to sleep and
heal them. In the tale of "Clídna's
Wave" she falls in love with a mortal,
"Keevan of the Curling Locks,"
and leaves Tir-na-n'Og ("Land of Eternal
Youth") with him. But when he goes off
to hunt, leaving her on the beach, she is
swept to sea by a great wave, leaving her
lover desolate. The Modern Irish form, Clíodhna,
is a very popular baby girl name in Ireland
today.
